Escape Route For The Burned Out
2022 works on rest by Carly Garza
Escape Route For The Burned Out
It’s June 2022. We are overworked, underpaid, and full of grief. We’ve seen hustle culture take over, as we shoulder the individual responsibility of bouncing back from the economic and mental health toll the pandemic has taken. But what we haven’t seen so much, is an allowing of restful space. So, with cupped hands, here:
YOU DO NOT NEED TO EARN REST.
Rest is always deserved.
Rest is healthy.
Rest is safe.
Rest is essential.
Escape Route For The Burned Out uses images and materials associated with rest and sleep, in order to create an environment that facilitates restful thoughts and gives the viewer permission to relax. I use bedsheets and other natural fabrics to create pieces that invoke bedroom scenes. I use large-scale images of people at rest, to say: Look, here we are, resting too. Lay your head down. You don’t need to move. Look at the clouds. Take a breath.
